WHAT WE DO

The Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club was founded in 1936 as the Shrewsbury Handicap Sailing Association by a group of local sailors in support of sailing and sailboat racing on the Shrewsbury River.

Originally sailing off a beach with a small hut, the intent of the now Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club (SSYC) always was to bring together area residents who enjoy the pleasure of the actions of wind, water and sail. As written in the club’s Constitution, this club is organized to “… bring together congenial people who are interested in boats, sailing, cruising and racing; to encourage yacht building and improvement of design; to encourage and preserve the arts of sailing and navigation and to furnish instruction therein to its members and to foster and maintain adherence to the highest ideals of sportsmanship.”

Simple and to the point, SSYC is about the love of sailing and about the camaraderie that draws sailors together. A volunteer organization, run by members for our mutual benefit and for the betterment of the club and the sport of sailing, after over eighty years our focus remains sailing. Members and guests enjoy a spectacular view from the Clubhouse deck, overlooking the water with a vantage point that provides for many memorable, awe inspiring sunsets over the river during the season.

We encourage and preserve the art of sailing and navigation, maintaining one of the top junior sailing programs in the northeast. Our program has produced many national and international champions. At the same time, we continue to promote a top-flight one-design racing program for adults and children, sailing seven active fleets from April through October.
